“The Welsh Dragon”
Known as “The Welsh Dragon” because of my signature on prints, my love of photography began whist attending evening classes to learn how to take pictures of my then preschool age children: the tutor developed a print in the darkroom and I was “hooked”. The realization that it was possible to produce emotional images came when I photographed wet ponies at a Horse Sale. My photography developed into an aim to capture places, people, their traditions and way of life before they changed forever.
A panel of monochrome prints of images of the Slate areas of North Wales led to a project “Land of my Fathers”. A series of visits to the annual Appleby Fair to photograph Gypsies, included in a panel “Children of the world”, an invitation to a wedding in Ghana resulted in “Village Life Ghana”. These projects gained Distinctions, including the first person to be awarded two RPS Fellowships and only Welsh woman to be awarded MFIAP. A project “Tribal Life Ethiopia” lectures and an Exhibition raised money and awareness of Eye Disease for the local Glan Clwyd Eye Hospital Link with Hossana Eye Hospital whose aim is to educate and support and treat Eye disease in Southern Ethiopia
Believing that “Going for Distinctions”, entering Exhibitions etc. gives photographers an aim and stretches them to improve and enjoy their photography more, led to a love of helping people to achieve their ambition. I served on the LRPS Panel for 20 years and currently Chairman of the Disabled Photographers Society Distinctions Panel.Teaching in Adult Education Centers, Colleges, and the Open University as well as delivering Workshops on Distinctions for my own Dragonpix Improvers Group, and Fotospeed Academy, I thoroughly enjoy. I am most proud and get maximum satisfaction from Mentoring and helping photographers, from all over the world in person, by email, post. It has been estimated that more than 1,500 photographers have been helped by me, on a one-to-one basis, over the past 35 years. The most enjoyment and thrill I get is when someone I have helped achieves their aim.
Welsh Dragon lectures started in 1979. Sponsorship in early 1980s by Ilford, jointly with Fotospeed and then by Fotospeed whose sponsorship and support has been enjoyed for more than 20 years, resulting in over 1,300 lectures to date. Invitations to Photographic Societies, RPS, PAGB Federations to lecture, judge, select exhibitions, take part in Workshops, Seminars at venues in every area of UK, many of the Islands around Britain, Jersey, Guernsey, Gibraltar, Belgium, Australia and New Zealand.
I am honored to be second woman to be elected a member of the London Salon of Photography. Holder of APAGB meritorious service award, Hon. Life Vice President of the Edinburgh Photographic Society and Honorary Life member of the Royal Photographic Society and Rhyl Photographic Society. A member of the Disabled Photographers Society, Yorkshire Mono Group and Eryri Group.
Meeting, making friends with and taking pictures of people is a privilege. Photography opens up a new, wonderful world, amazing opportunities and for me, next to my family and friends, Photography is the love of my life.
